A small disclaimer though: my process is messy and inconsistent and I’m super lazy. My way of doing things is probably not the best one!

I usually follow these steps if I’m working with lineart (for painterly stuff I skip the sketch phase and start with messy blobs of color/silhouettes): For the rough sketch I use a transparent layer set on normal, and I draw with a dark gray/dark purple brush at ~50% opacity. When I work on PS I pretty much only use the square textured brushes from this. I use a lot of references if I’m unfamiliar with the subject or the pose I’m trying to draw isn’t my regular “character standing around looking pretty” 😅 I refine the sketch on a separate layer, using the same brush at 100% opacity. Then I hide the rough sketch layer (or merge it if it’s not too messy), set the clean sketch layer on multiply and leave it on top for the most part. I paint the background and the base colors underneath, on two different layers (in case I want to make quick adjustments). After filling in the base colors I add an overlay layer with gradients (I paint big areas with a soft brush, making the shadows darker, the highlights brighter and the colors more vibrant in general). Magic Iso Maker 5 5 Magic Disc Iso more. Then I add the details and refine the picture on a new layer (set on normal) on top of the sketch layer.

The last step is adding adjustment layers (color balance, curves etc) and filters (I owe my life to smart sharpen).
